We asked Dr. Jayshree Padole, BAMS, MD (Ayu), an Ayurvedic doctor and therapist to share her insights on the ancient science of Ayurveda. In the passage below, she speaks about Panchkarma – a five-step cleansing and rejuvenating program most of us urban people should consider.
Dr. Padole: Panchakarma (Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Raktamokshan and Nasya) is a cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body, mind and consciousness. It is known for its beneficial effects on overall health, wellness and self-healing.
According to Ayurveda, health, happiness and an inner sense of wellbeing mark the natural state of our being. Ayurveda defines health as a body which is clear of toxins, a mind at peace where emotions are calm and happy, wastes are efficiently eliminated and organs function normally. Eight or ten hours in the office and most of us are looking for the most comfortable place to sink in. All the mind work, some of it tedious, does a lot of us in. And many of us use that one drink to feel better (and smokers do even worse), which then turns into another drink. In short, that is office life for you.
However, it does not have to be that way. First of all, you can definitely feel much more sprightly with a little smarter use of your body while at the desk. And the other thing is, it keeps you from going fat. Anyone will tell you that they put on those extra pounds because they sat on the desk and worked to make money for a ‘better’ life. Yes, it is ironic.

Neuroscientists have proven that, in our lifetime, we not only hang on to our neurons but we also grow new ones. Throughout our life, our brain is continually expanding and reshaping itself in response to what we learn through it. Even something as silly as learning to bake can alter the structure of the brain. In a recent experiment, Lutz Jäncke, a Swiss neuroscientist, studied the brains of people who were learning to play a musical instrument. It was found that their brain went through significant changes in areas that control hearing, memory and hand movements. This was true even in participants who were 65 and older. So, what can we eat for a smarter-working, highly powerful brain?
